The most important fat-soluble antioxidant required by our body. Vitamin E also helps in protecting oxidation of vitamin A and vitamin C. It further protects cell membranes from the various toxins like heavy metals, toxic compounds, drugs, chemicals, radiation as well as free radical damage.Let us go through the various functions of this antioxidant in our detox process:
- It functions as a free-radical scavenger. It breaks down lipid free-radical chain reaction and so protects cell membranes from oxidative damage.
- It is also a nitrite scavenger by blocking conversion of nitrosamines into carcinogenic compounds.
- Inhibition of carcinogenic compounds like TPA and mezerein.
- Inverse correlation between this vitamin and cancer. Low plasma levels of the vitamin has been discovered in women with breast cancer compared to the control arm.
- Powerful cardio-protective effect to prevent LDL-cholesterol from oxidative damage. It has been shown to reduce by one-fourth to one-third less coronary risk than others who did not take this supplement.
There are 2 types of Vitamin E, natural and synthetic. The natural form is d-alpha-tocopherol which is the better choice compared to the synthetic ones (dl-alpha-tocopherol). Ability to achieve substantial amounts of the vitamin can be difficult via the consumption of food. It is recommended to consume not more than 400 IU of it per day due to toxicity reasons.
Let us explore the types of foods rich in the antioxidant. It can be mainly found in whole grains, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. Some examples are: sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, oatmeal, asparagus, and brown rice.
