Foods and Herbs for Essential
Liver Cleanse Support

Understanding the basics of liver cleanse support helps us to appreciate an effective liver detox through a natural process. Such support starts by giving the body its required foundation so that the liver is able to produce efficiently its detoxification enzymes.

So what are the required nutrients that the liver feeds on for it to function optimally:

  1. Glutathione: This is one of the most important antioxidant required by the liver during the phase 1 detox phase to scavenge the free radicals. However, it can not be increased in amount just by consuming it specifically. It needs to be produced from the cells.

Therefore, the best way is to increase production of glutathione is to facilitate the precursor amino acids like cysteine, glycine, amino acids, and glutamate. And providing enough sulphur-containing amino acids will help boost the cells production of glutathione.

  2. Vitamin C: Involved in Phase 1 and 2 detoxification processes. Also help the body to produce glutathione for detoxification process known as acetylation (involving in detoxifying sulfa drugs and antibiotics).

Vitamin C-rich foods are broccoli, red and green pepper, watercress, cauliflower, strawberries, spinach, lemon, asparagus, green onion, papaya, mangos, and parsley.

  3. Magnesium: Involved in Phase 1 and 2 pathways. Lacking in magnesium can lead to slower phase 2 and lead to toxic buildup. Foods rich in magnesium for liver cleanse support are avocado, sweet corn, walnuts, carrot, celery, asparagus, dandelion, fresh green peas, broccoli, cauliflower, sunflower seeds.

  4. Zinc: This facilitates the most enzymatic reactions among all minerals and is an important mineral used in phase 1 pathway. Zinc-rich foods are walnuts, almonds, black beans, garlic, carrots, cabbage, ginger root, cauliflower, spinach, and hazelnuts.

  5. Folic acid: This is involved in the methylation process by combining methyl groups toxins for detoxification. Some of the foods rich in folic acid are lentils, split peas, almond, broccoli, avocado, Brussels sprouts, coconut, cabbage, and oatmeal.
The cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts have abundant of indole-3-carbinol. This phytonutrient stimulates many of the detoxifying enzymes in phase 1 and phase 2 pathways.

Sulphur-containing foods like red and green pepper, onions, and broccoli helps in the binding of sulphur-containing compounds to toxin.

Herbs that have gained recognition for effective liver cleanse support:

  1. Dandelion: Enhances the flow of bile, improve liver congestion, and reduce bile duct inflammation. It has also many nutrients that may improve liver function.

  2. Bupleurum root: Help circulation within the liver.

  3. Curcumin: yellow compound within the tumeric. Helps slow down Phase 1 pathway while stimulate Phase 2 – reduces any situation of toxic buildup.

  4. Milk thistle, Silymarin: It contains flavanoids like silybinin (, silydianin, and silychristin that have powerful antioxidant activities. Silymarin is 60 – 70% made of silybinin. Silymarin helps bind toxic free iron, scavenge free radicals and protect damage to cell membranes, blocks intake of toxins in the liver. It also prevents depletion of glutathione and hence improves the liver detoxification process.
