Legumes, Lentils, Beans & Peas
Rich in Protein & Phytochemicals

Legumes are a class of vegetables consisting of beans, lentils, and split peas. They are one of the most underrated plant groups that provide tons of nutrition required by our body for detox process. Many American’s diet does not include enough of these food today.

The benefits are underlined below:

  • Contains high amounts of soluble fiber that provides good bowl movements. The high fiber further decreases the rate of blood sugar within our bloodstream leaving us with more alert and less lethargic after a meal.

  • It contains carbohydrates and proteins for the growth and repair of our muscles, brain, and tissues. The amount of protein in beans, peas and lentils are relatively high. This makes it an attractive alternative to red meat as our source of protein.

Consuming red meat in the long term has been linked with causing saturated fat clogging in our arteries. And it can lead to increasing our blood cholesterol. However, legumes do not have such links and instead provide either low fat or monounsaturated fat (good fats). It also has cholesterol lowering properties that is very beneficial for high cholesterol people.

  • There are great amounts of minerals that can be derived from the beans, lentils, and peas. They include zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium. They help to maintain our body’s muscles, blood regulation, and provide energy.

  • They also have a wide array of vitamin B complexes that helps to take care of our nerve cells, strengthen the immune system, and also regulate blood production. It also contains great amounts of phytochemicals that assist in detoxification process especially against cancer cells.
It has been shown in studies that women of certain ethnic groups consuming higher amounts of legumes have a lower tendency to develop breast cancer. This might be due to an estrogen-blocking phytoestrogen preventing the cancer development.

We have to take note that consuming these beans, lentil and peas do not provide enough amino acids even though we get high amounts of protein. In such case, we would want to consume more whole grains to compensate the amino acids. The synergistic effect is the protein lacking in whole grains can also be compensated by eating legumes. Therefore, their combination works very well for our body’s function.
