Folic Acid
Cancer Prevention through the Correction of DNA and Cell Growth

Folic acid has been shown to co-work with vitamin B12 in many of our bodily functions. Traditionally, we know that pregnant women need to consume folic acid (or folate) to prevent birth defects in babies. In the similar fashion, it also helps to prevent cancer. The reasons are:

  • Folate together with vitamin B12 corrects DNA duplication, which is the fundamental reason that cancer cells grow continuously without dying. Low folate amounts in our body has been shown to lead to cancer metastasis.

  • It synthesizes and lead to methylatio of the DNA to prevent them from mutating rapidly, reduce damage and replication errors.

  • 88,756 women who were in the Nurses' Health Survey between 1980 to 1984 found that women with folate consumption of more than 400 micrograms daily were linked with lesser colon cancer risk. This is compared against those taking only 200 microgram a day. Those consuming multivitamins with folate for more than 15 years have 75% lesser risk of colon cancer than those who do not take supplements.

  • Folate also contributes to proper growth of our cells and prevent errors found among cancer cells. Therefore, adequate amounts of it in our diet controls error cell growth.
We would advice consuming at least 400 micrograms of folinic acid (the active form) per day. This has to be taken together with vitamin B-complexes (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) for optimal benefit toward the body natural detox process.

Food with good amount of it are dark leafy greens like spinach and kale. We also found beet and mustard greens to contain good concentration of it too. Legumes like black-eyed peas, beans, lentils, and split peas also contain high amount of it. Try to avoid alcohol because it can reduce the folate amount in our body.
