Main Detox Diet Foods
Starting From Vegetables

Whenever we discuss about detox diet foods, the main category we focus on are vegetables. Why? This is because these are the types of foods that are considered all natural and unprocessed. They contain the richest amounts of nutrition and phytochemicals that functions to protect and heal our body.

Vegetables contain nutrients that can provide alter the pathway of DNA damages as well as blocking the development of cancerous cells. Before a cell becomes cancerous, it would require such DNA damages to occur many times. So our consistent consumption at an early age of vegetables is important to prevent such these events from happening.

The amount of vegetables recommended a day is at least eight to ten servings and also to include smaller amounts of fruits that are more alkaline based. It is also advisable to eat a raw food diet because the abundance of antioxidants, phytochemicals, and minerals would be lost the moment they are cooked. If you can’t bring yourself to do so, then attempting to consume at least half the amounts raw would be a great leap forward.

These antioxidants, phytochemicals, and minerals are our basic ingredients to feed our detoxification organs in performing at their optimum. For example, gluthathione is a very important antioxidant utilized by our liver to transform fat-soluble toxins like chemicals and heavy metals into water-soluble substances for excretion.

Let us discuss some of the important vegetables required as our detox diet foods:

Cruciferous vegetables
Some good examples:

  • Broccoli
  • Bok Choy
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Kale
  • Watercress
  • Horseradish
  • Mustard greens

Above are some examples of cruciferous vegetables where they have an odor caused by nitrogen, sulfur, and glucose-containing chemicals called glucosinolates. This chemical conjugates into isothiocyanates, sulforaphanes, dithiolethione, and indole-3-carbinol. All these are the greatest phytochemicals with anti-cancer properties. Such vegetables also have D-glucarate that assist strongly in our phase two detoxification process in our liver.

Isothiocyanates are known to speed up removal of carcinogens. Indole-3-carbinol and D-glucarate are also strongly associated with protection against breast cancer and prostate cancer through their control on our hormonal production as well as detoxifying environmental toxins like dioxins. So it only makes strong sense to have them within our daily diet.

Other well-known detox diet foods are:

    Garlic and Onions
These belong to the allium family of vegetables where they are characterized by their strong odor. This characteristic again shows the activity of the sulfur compounds within these plants. The allium sulfide compounds are known to be effective protectors against cancer as well as cardiovascular diseases. An Iowa Women’s Health Study found that women who consume significant amounts of garlic have about 30% lesser chance of developing colon cancer.

Another interesting point about garlic is that it is best consumed raw to benefit from its sulfur compound. Yet when they are cut, it releases an enzyme called allicin that should be left 15 minutes before cooking. Why? The enzyme transforms into another substance that has anti-cancer properties not destroyed by heat. So remember not to throw in your garlic to cook right after cutting but leave it for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

Onions contain an important flavonoid known as quercitin. It is been shown in test tube research an ability to prevent the growth and increase of breast cancer cells. Mammary tumor growth in our body is also shown to be delayed in its proliferation. The sulfur compounds in the onions are also excellent liver detoxification substances.

Other types of detox diet foods:
    Whole grains
    Legumes
    Essential fatty acids
    Soybeans & Soy Products
    Herbs and spices
    Raw food diet
