Calcium Supplements More than Building Bones
Calcium supplements are important minerals for our body. It makes up the largest percentage of our body weight. Most of us would have already known that calcium is very much involved in our bone building. However, few understand that it has to work in concert with magnesium to build our bones in a magnesium-calcium ratio of 2:1. Excessive calcium without magnesium can result in its buildup and clog the arteries. So what other important applications does calcium have toward our body as well as the detoxification process? - It feeds and relaxes our nervous system.
- It is involved in our muscle contraction process.
- It supports enzyme activity during our healing and energy production.
If we look at muscle contraction, this simple process is actually an on-going within our body especially in our colon. The colon is made of muscles and it is in constant relax and contraction mode called peristalsis. Therefore, it greatly assist in our bowel movement and keeping our colon in perfect function. Supplementation with calcium at 1.2g to 1.5g daily has also been shown in studies to lower the rates of colon adenoma polyps (which are benign tumors that can become malignant). How it helps this prevention is by binding with bile salts and fatty acids that are known to damage the colon's lining called epithelium. This greatly prevents the rapid cell division along the epithelium. We always recommend consuming most of our calcium requirements via plant-based foods and supplements. Many would have expected the consumption of dairy products as the best source. In actual fact, recent studies have discovered that dairy products are correlated with greater chances of various cancers like prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. Our recommendation is calcium supplements of 1.2g to 1.5g daily. The best form of calcium that our body can absorb is the chelated ones. In addition, calcium citrate, calcium gluconate, calcium lactate, or calcium aspartate are good choices to consider. Carbonat has been shown to be less biologically available. Food that are rich are the dark leafy vegetables as well as the following food such as broccoli, kelps, dandelion, turnip greens, kale, parsley, watercress, almonds, tofu, sunflower seeds, and beet.
